The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM is a true modern classic: a standard wide-angle lens beloved by reportage photographers for its natural perspective, low-light capability and extraordinary optical performance.
The Canon EF 35mm is a fast 35mm full frame prime lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.4. The lens features a BR optics element to drastically minimise chromatic aberration and colour fringing; and because it is an L lens it features only the best glass elements along with dust and water sealing.
This lens will mount and focus on all Canon EOS DSLRs, and will not crop or vignette on full frame lenses.
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM from Canon is an L-series prime wide-angle lens featuring Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics and a maximum aperture of f/1.4, making it ideal for shooting in low-light situations and for controlling depth of field. Two aspherical elements and one Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) element combine with the BR element to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and sharpness.
A Subwavelength Coating has also been applied to reduce ghosting and lens flare for greater color accuracy and contrast. The Ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast and near-silent AF operation. Full time manual focus override enables precise manual focus even when in AF mode.
Characterized by its unique and advanced optical composition, the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM is a wide-angle L-series prime featuring a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture to suit working in difficult lighting conditions. Its optical design incorporates a Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element; a specially developed element that helps to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing for notable clarity and color accuracy.
In addition to this, an ultra-low dispersion element and two aspherical elements are also featured to further control various aberrations and distortion for great sharpness and resolution. Individual elements also feature a Sub Wavelength Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for high contrast and color fidelity when working in harsh and backlit conditions.
- Wide-angle 35mm lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 56mm equivalent focal length.
- Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords significant control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
- The Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element virtually eliminates color fringing and chromatic aberrations by refracting shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum (blue light).
- A pair of aspherical elements and one UD element also help to control aberrations and distortions for sharper, clearer image quality.
- A Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
- A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
- As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
- Fluorine-coating on exposed elements affords protection to the optical system, resists smudging and fingerprints, and is easier to clean.
- Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Great low light performance.
The lens features a large maximum aperture of f/1.4 to provide a shallow depth of field, as well as great low light performance. At maximum aperture the lens captures about eight times as much light then a conventional kit lens at max aperture.
BR (Blue Spectrum Refractive) optics refracts shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum (blue light) to greatly reduce chromatic aberration and color fringing. greatly helps to reduce chromatic aberration.
Mounts and focuses on all full frame and cropped (1.3x and 1.6x) EOS DSLR’s.
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM will mount and focus on all Canon EOS DSLRs. Mount the lens to an EF-M to EF adapter and it will even fully operate on EOS M mirrorless cameras.
UD and aspheric lenses
Two aspheric lenses and one UD lens helps to reduce various aberrations and distortions to provide a high level of image quality.
A subwavelength coating minimizes surface reflections, ghosting, and flare for increased contrast.
A 9-blade diaphragm helps to provide a soft and elegant looking bokeh.
Fast, silent autofocus with manual override
The lens is equipped with Canon’s current top-end focusing motor, the ring-type UltraSonic Motor. The USM motor is fast, quiet, accurate, and allows full-time manual focus override
Minimum focus distance of 28cm
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens features a short minimum focusing distance of 28cm (0.28m) and a maximum magnification of 0.21x. This will enable users to focus extremely close to their subjects, while the lens’ optics creates a shallow depth of field to create truly stunning images.
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L II USM Lens is ideal for photographing in low light due to a large aperture and it creates beautifully blurred backgrounds too.
Superb low-light performance
A large f/1.4 maximum aperture lets in two stops more light than an f/2.8 zoom lens, making this an ideal lens for hand-held photography in low-light conditions. Shooting at wide apertures allows photographers to limit depth-of-field. Creating such shallow-focus effects is one way that a subject can be made to stand out against a background, and is particularly effective when combined with the lens’s wide-angle field of view. The lens’s nine-bladed aperture renders out-of-focus areas smoothly and naturally.
Sets new standards in image quality
Blue Spectrum Refractive optics, made from an organic optical material developed by Canon, tackle colour fringing by correcting chromatic aberrations to a degree not previously possible. Ultra Low-Dispersion (UD) optics and two aspherical lens elements provide incredible sharpness right across the frame – even when the lens is used wide open. Subwavelength structure coating boosts contrast and guards against flare and ghosting when shooting into the light.
Focuses quickly and discreetly, letting you capture the unexpected
Ring-type USM autofocus establishes accurate focus quickly and in near silence, letting you work without disturbing the scene.
Full-time manual focusing allows focus adjustments without changing focus mode or removing your camera from your eye.
Blue Spectrum Refractive optics
Canon developed Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) optics to tackle coloured fringing in large-diameter lenses. This bespoke organic optical material is more effective at correcting such fringing than other technologies, like fluorite, Ultra Low-Dispersion (UD) or Super UD glass. Coloured fringing is caused by chromatic aberration – a phenomenon where light of different colours is focused at different points. Using BR optical material in the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM minimises this effect. Other elements in the lens can then be optimised to give superb sharpness, contrast and resistance to flare.
Keep shooting even in tough conditions
Canon’s legendary L-series build-quality inspires confidence and adds durability. Weather sealing guards against dust and moisture, while a fluorine coating protects the lens’s front and rear element from grease and dirt, and makes it easier to clean.
