Introduction
The inventive Canon EOS 90D is a mid-range DSLR that replaces the 3.5-year-old 80D. It fits between the EOS 77D and the ‘yes, it still exists’ EOS 7D Mark II, and offers Canon’s latest processor and a brand-new sensor.
The EOS 90D features a super-fast 10 frames per second continuous shooting with full autofocus tracking (via the optical viewfinder) and 11 frames per second during Live View shooting with fixed autofocus. This high-speed camera, combined with the 3″ vari-angle LCD touch screen enables you to shoot as you like, in any situation.
The 90D is essentially the DSLR version of the EOS M6 Mark II mirrorless camera, which was introduced alongside it. Since the specs are nearly identical, Canon is letting potential buyers choose what type of shooting experience they want: a midsize DSLR with an optical viewfinder and more physical controls or a smaller and lighter mirrorless model with a removable electronic finder.
And, of course, the difference in native lens lineups between the EF and M mounts could attract different types of users, as well.

45-Point All Cross-Type autofocus
The camera features a new high-performance, flexible 45 points all cross-type AF system. When used with a compatible lens, each focus point is an f/5.6 cross-type, which ensures the camera can lock on to both horizontal and vertical detail quickly and precisely. The technology delivers accurate, fast autofocus and tracking over a wide area and across a range of subjects.
Designed to shoot in a range of lighting conditions, with a variety of lens and extender combinations, the AF system is sensitive down to -3EV (moonlight). It contains 27 f/8 compatible AF points (9 f/8 cross-type) and one extra sensitive f/2.8 and f/5.6 dual cross-type point in the center. For optimum flexibility, users have the choice of selecting 4 AF zone modes, which are superimposed in the viewfinder and can be quickly selected using the area selector button next to the shutter release.
Dual Pixel CMOS and Movie Servo autofocus
The 90D from Canon features Dual Pixel CMOS AF that is enhanced thanks to the improved sensor performance and revised AF algorithms in the camera. When shooting or recording in live view, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a dense array of phase-detect points across the image sensor for fast and accurate focus.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF is now also possible with all EF and EF-S lenses and can be used in combination with continuous shooting during Live View.

32.5MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
45-Point All Cross-Type AF and Dual Pixel CMOS AF Systems
The cross-type design of the sensors affords greater accuracy in low-contrast and mixed lighting conditions, and the broad coverage of the 45 sensors is ideal for tracking and maintaining focus on moving subjects. Making use of the 45-points is a series of four AF area selection modes, including single-point AF; Zone AF, where you can select from one of nine AF zones; Large Zone AF, which offers a choice of three selectable zones; and 45-point AF auto selection, which allows the camera to select a single point automatically.
When recording video or shooting in live view, a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system is employed that features 5481 selectable autofocus points. This focusing system offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. Dual Pixel CMOS AF integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement.
Body Design and Wireless Connectivity
- Touchscreen 3.0″ 1.04m-dot LCD monitor features a vari-angle design to permit working from high and low angles and the touchscreen design facilitates intuitive control over menu navigation and touch-to-focus operation.
- The pentaprism type optical viewfinder offers 100% frame coverage for high compositional accuracy when shooting at eye-level. Additionally, further aiding shooting with the viewfinder, AF points and mode, compositional grids, a horizontal electronic level, and other assistive features can be displayed during use.
